TAPPING INTO SELF-LOVE WITH GRATITUDE: How to Use EFT to Boost Self-Worth

By Will Moon

Introduction

This blog will discuss the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) which helps to clear energy blocks in you body, and re-frames negative belief systems caused by self-criticism and fear.

Self-Love

Everything you think, say, and do is influenced by what you think about yourself. Self-love and self-care lead to healthy life choices, lower levels of stress, reduced feelings of isolation and loneliness, and helps combat procrastination. Self-love is the foundation of self-confidence and self-assuredness. Success in any area of life is typically accompanied by healthy feelings of self-love.

Self-Criticism

The opposite of self-love is self-criticism. It is the primary cause of low self-esteem and depression. Habitual negative thinking creates blockages in the flow of energy in our bodies, because the fear it generates causes contraction on a cellular level. This is why we feel heavy when we think negatively. Many people suffer from low self-esteem because of self-criticism, and this is really the killer of success.

Self-Identification

The sub-conscious mind regulates all autonomous processes in the body (i.e. body temperature, breathing, glucose levels, etc.), and keeps it in a ‘range of balance’. It also regulates the range of thoughts we typically think, the feelings we typically feel, and the behaviors we typically do in order to create an emotional ‘zone-of-comfort’. This keeps our emotions balanced.  Both autonomous physical and mental functions are built-in systems necessary for survival. The sub-conscious mind uses our habitual thoughts, feelings, and behaviors to create comfort zone and this gives us a sense of identity. Our habitual thoughts, feelings, and behaviors form a ‘memorized-me’.

It is Hard to Change

Unfortunately, the sub-conscious mind is resistant to change. It generates the internal thought chatter we all experience, and prevents us from doing an action or following through with an intention that is outside the ‘zone-of-comfort’ which has been established by our old habits of thought. Also, these habits of thought create our belief systems which inform every decision we make about ourselves and the world around us. If emotional pain and negative self-talk are our ‘emotional range’, our sub-conscious mind will work to maintain it, thinking it is our comfort zone, and who we are!

Emotional Pain

Emotional pain caused by life experiences and negative self-talk are ‘recorded’ energetically in our bodies. Some eastern healing traditions go as far as relating physical conditions to personality characteristics, i.e. a heart condition may reflect an inability to accept love. Because a lack of self-love and self-judgment causes an interruption of energy flow in the body, techniques to restore this flow help relieve emotional pain. Practitioners of acupuncture and acupressure have long used energy points to restore the flow of ‘Chi’, or energy, in order to heal physical and emotional issues. EFT goes a step further to combine cognitive re-structuring and exposure techniques with acupuncture stimulation to balance energy flow and reduce physical and emotional pain.

EFT Method

EFT is a process of tapping, in a systematic way, on a number of specific acupuncture points while focusing on a specific feeling, thought, or image. The specific points are the end-points of the major energy meridians, or channels of subtle energy which flows through the body. The tapping functions similarly to the needles used in acupuncture to restore the flow of energy. Tapping is then combined with acknowledgement of a specific problem, making strong positive statements in relation to the specific problem, ‘reminder phrases’, and affirmations in order to facilitate emotional healing.

The Evidence

Research studies that have been conducted on EFT, together with numerous reports from practitioners in EFT workshops, have produced overwhelming evidence of success in healing emotional trauma and emotional pain. Some research has even shown that tapping sends signals to the part of the brain that controls stress. In fact, EFT has been so successful that it has been recognized by the FDA as an alternative medicine treatment for veterans with PTSD. It has had positive results for treating moderate to severe depression, significant reduction in anxiety and PTSD symptoms such as improvement in heart rate, blood pressure, cortisol levels, phobias, panic attacks, and over-all caused patients to be calmer and more relaxed.

Conclusion

EFT combines energy medicine, acupuncture, thought-field therapy, neuro-linguistic programming and cognitive re-framing to create a powerful tool for relieving emotional pain caused by trauma, and changing destructive thought habits in a relatively short period of time. For the Law-of-Attraction (LOA) community, it is a powerful tool to heal persistent issues of mental resistance and emotional hurt in order to more effectively maintain feelings joy and happiness.
